Timeline of Community Support

Inception

A public meeting was held to elect a Management Committee for Parramatta Community Transport Group. The goal of this organization was to develop community transport services for frail aged people and people with disabilities living in the Parramatta Local Government Area.

16 July 1987
July 1988

Incorporation

The organization was incorporated as an Association under the name of Parramatta Community Transport Association Inc. Our first office was in an old Department of Housing building located in South St, Rydalmere. That same month and year, the organization purchased its first vehicle, a Mazda minibus, that was modified to carry wheelchairs and was used to transport our clients to and from shops.

Digitisation

Office moved to Parramatta. We also computerized our accounting and office systems.

August 1991
November 2006

Expansion

Office moved to 2A Arthur Street Merrylands, which allowed us to increase the number of resources, staff and vehicles.

Settling In

After extensive negotiations with Transport for NSW and the current landlord, Community Wheels Inc. moved to our current location in Northmead.

January 2014

Since incorporation, our organisation has continued to expand as demand for our services increased.  We started with one full-time coordinator, one part-time service administrator, one casual driver, and a group of volunteers that used their own cars to provide medical transport.

Today, we have more than 40 employees and volunteers, and a mixed fleet of 19 vehicles including sedans, vans with wheelchair hoist, and big 20-seater buses.

This is a new experience for me at Feb23 as I need to attend the Cancer Care Clinic daily. Sometimes a car picks me up, sometimes a small van. Sometimes, I am the only passenger, other times a few others are in the vehicle. The VEHICLES are always clearly marked, & the DRIVER'S all wear a uniform of a yellow shirt. The Vans are also WHEELCHAIR user accessible. The DRIVER'S are always busy on their run, as this service is in HIGH DEMAND, especially for elderly people attending MEDICAL appointments, & start very early in the morning before stated time, as I believe they transport the Dialysis patients. They work a very long day. Some drivers are new, ajusting to this very high demand job, which requires a lot of consideration & compassion, not to mention getting to & from unfamiliar addresses. Others have been with CW many years & are very familiar with the run. I find the drivers to be friendly, social, & helpful, assisting you to get in the vehicle, making sure your SEAT BELT is reachable, & assisting you out of the van. Pausing when you reach home to allow time for you to get to your front door before driving off. Some like a bit of a chat, others prefer to stay focussed on their ever changing slightly unpredictable schedule. You can pay cash, Cr Cd or by Account if you are a frequent user. Community Wheels did not get off to a good start with me as the FIRST PICKUP was for ●SURGICAL appointments FEB23 at 1pm & they arrived at 12.50pm after having it down for 2pm error, stressing me out & ●DELAYING SURGERY. ●Suddenly I had NO arranged PICKUP to GET HOME as I didn't know the finish time was 3.30pm & a family member had to then drive 3&1/2 hrs to pick me up or ●SURGERY WOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELLED. I went into SURGERY very stressed. This was NOT a Driver issue, as I have found every one of the drivers excellent without fail, but an OFFICE issue, & it ●happened again on the very next CRITICAL APPOINTMENT for CHEMO via a PORT IN MY CHEST NEXT TO MY HEART. After that, things appeared to run smoothly once I thought I got onto the right person in the OFFICE. After several tries. But no. They don't really take any notice of what you say. CW Office staff need to lift their game. They are here in a service capacity, not some volunteer option, especially when it is for special medical needs, not Social gallivanting around. You do not need to pick me up on time (I am left sitting waiting 1 hr early in hospital, when I am dealing with a very rare Anorectal cancer, & toilet timing is a issue, & CANNOT SIT IN HOSP), you need to GET ME THERE ON TIME. ●17OCT23 day b4 Colonoscopy call at 4.05pm, already on Fast & BOWEL MEDICATION PREP, living on the loo. CW got the time wrong again for SURGERY tomorrow be there 8am Auto generated call told me will pick me up 8.05am. I rang & was told by *COLBY* 400 people having surgery on same day (!). I had booked day well in advance, & confirmed time as soon as hosp informed me. Family 3& 1/2 hrs away & in Brisbane. NOT ALLOWED to get a TAXI there. Taking BOWEL PREP 3.30AM tomorrow. Any other appointment I can get there late, but NOT SURGERY. ●THIRD now for minor SURGERY. Confusion re CW, SURGERY again in next few wks. Don't think the other 400 surgery people tomorrow ate all doing a BOWEL PREP for Colonoscopy at age 75 diagnosed with VERY RARE AnorectalCancer. A little common sense would go a long way. I have never used CW SOCIALLY. But I support the idea as isolation can be tedious. There are only 20-25 cars & drivers doing a massive responsibility daily job. And Funding is an uphill battle with the reluctant Government. But I believe, according to the funding available that MEDICAL MUST BE THE NECESSARY PRIORITY. Well off elderly can catch a taxi to their hairdresser. I am 74+ & pre cancer treatment, otherwise walked, & used public transport, & prefer that others have the SOCIAL OUTING opportunity that I don't yet need. But my energy is debilitated after RADIATION treatment & walking isn't easy at this time. Check CW FACE BOOK re SOCIAL. Lots of people to make friends with on the BUS.
